In the Library: 2016 Election Coverage

A brilliant magazine issue

Laura Praszker, one of our long time library assistants and caretaker of our periodicals, called our attention to the September 19-25 edition of Bloomberg Businessweek, the entirety of which covers the diversity of America’s population and the cultural and political divisions between us.  It’s a fascinating issue and worth a look!  We have it on display along with some of our election related books.

Four interactive websites

School Library Journal has provided an excellent short list of election websites to explore: – has an Election Glossary, an Election Night Tracker, and an interactive “Win the White House” game where one plays strategically to win electoral college votes. – offers several interactive state-by-state charts showing each candidate’s chances of winning.  Nicely done! – a fascinating and well-curated collection of historical campaign videos.  Students will really enjoy browsing through this collection. – an excellent site to spend time brushing up on the most current election news and making your own election predictions!  You figure out which states your candidate needs to win to get the coveted 270 electoral college votes.

Seventeen(!) California state propositions

Also available in the library are texts of the plethora of California state propositions.  One can hardly begin early enough to read through all that will be on this year’s ballot.  As an aid to the overwhelmed voter, we’re delighted to share Damian Carroll’s one page summary of all of the propositions in haiku!   Here are two samples:

Proposition 59

Asks to overturn

Citizen’s United, but

Shucks, it’s non-binding

Proposition 56

The cigarette tax

Would go up, two bucks a pack

E-cigarettes, too

Stay tuned for information on the library’s mock election.  In the meantime, drop by to check out the Businessweek issue.  We think you’ll find it extremely interesting!
